Final Fantasy is probably the most popular JRPG series that has been released in western regions. It only truly gained mass attention with the release of Final Fantasy VII on the PlayStation. While it's a fantastic game and a title that I picked up on day one, it's not my favorite.
The title that truly captures the spirit of the series is Final Fantasy IX in my opinion. It dumps the technological worlds of FFVII & VIII and returns to it's high fantasy roots that the series was originally known for. I also found the characters more likable, Zidane is far more charismatic than Cloud and Squall from the previous two iterations.
