NES How many official games were released in the U.S. for the NES?

This is a good question for the NES experts here if anyone can answer it. Does anyone know how many U.S. released games did nintendo released for the original NES. It's got to be up there and I wonder who collected the most of those releases.

According to Game FAQs, there were 767 in North America:

They're really good for finding out those sort of facts. There were obviously a bunch more worldwide, almost doubling that number.
