SNES Mini wireless controller problem

Hi everyone. New user here. I've got a SNES Mini and it won't work with a wireless controller. I've got an 8bitdo SN30 2.4 ghz. I've also tried a generic wireless controller bought cheap on Amazon. That doesn't work either. To check my work,, I borrowed two other consoles from friends. One of them works with the wireless controllers, one of them doesn't. That's 2 down and 1 up. All three work fine with the stock wired controllers. BUT... I noticed that on the two machines that DON'T work w/wireless, I'm unable to make changes in the options menu. On the working console, I can makes changes in the options menu with the D-pad. No idea if that has anything to do with anything. Any help out there? The 8bitdo is a fine controller and I'd really like to use it.
