Wii U Streaming?

Has anyone done the streaming thing from your system to the tablet controller while the TV was in use for something else? If so, how far away from the console can you be? I'd imagine I wouldn't be able to take the tablet downstairs with me while the console was upstairs in my bedroom....... I'm asking because in the future I may end up acquiring a wii-U and looking into all of it's cool abiliities before-hand so it'll help me decide if I keep the console or sell it for cash.
